No Radar Needed: How to Face a Future without Fear

Growing up in Adelaide, I was always pretty chuffed that the WRE—the Weapons Research Establishment (later the Defence Research Centre Salisbury) was in SA.

Why?

Because they did rockets 🚀 and other cool stuff 💥 (Woomera).  Growing up back then I was absolutely obsessed with rockets, space, astronautics - you name it. Honestly, I still am!

But the WRE wasn’t just about rockets.  They were also working on a groundbreaking project called Jindalee - a cutting-edge over-the-horizon radar system that now keeps watch over Australia’s northern borders.

And that got me thinking…

Wouldn’t it be amazing to have my own “over-the-horizon radar” for life ?

Then there'd be no nasty surprises up ahead.

What would that be like?

Oh, I tried to build one.  Most of us do.  We call it planning, forecasting, estimating.

Guessing.

Hoping.

Our forecasts are comforting, aren’t they ?  They give us hope, satisfaction, & the illusion of control.

But here’s the catch: forecasts are just that - the future, unknown and unknowable.  And for me, those imagined futures didn’t comfort me; they terrified me.

I spent years trying to predict and control what lay ahead.

And you know what ?  It was all made up.

I scared myself with my own inventions - worst-case scenarios I’d created in my own mind.  Catastrophising was my middle name.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

None of us can truly know what’s over the horizon until we walk that path.

But what IS certain, is the here and now.

My fear of the future?  My catastrophising?

It wasn’t real.  It was just unexplored, unexamined fear - limiting beliefs about my own worth, my lack of self-trust, and my shaky self-belief.

Today, I don’t need an over-the-horizon radar.

In fact, I don’t want one.

Because I know that whether calamity or opportunity lies beyond my horizon, I will cope.  I will thrive.  And frankly, having a radar would ruin the surprise.

This shift is new for me.  Just a few years ago, I was trapped by fear.  Now, I’m excited by the opportunities that await.

How did I do it?

·  By taking responsibility for every part of my life

·  By owning my emotions

·  By building self-trust

·  By embracing my authenticity

·  By creating my own security within

And that’s the key - to build the capacity to cope, no matter what’s over the horizon.

So, are you excited about your horizon?

You should be.

Because when you look back at the horizon in your rear-view mirror, you’ll see how far you’ve come—and how amazing you are.

But if your horizon still scares you, as mine once did, give me a call, because I've been there too.
