I LIVED MY FATHER’S LIFE FOR 40 YEARS & IN THE WRONG BODY FOR 59.

After living 40 years in the wrong career, 59 in the wrong body, and 62 with a crappy mindset, at the age of 65, I’ve transformed my life completely.
Today, living authentically, with a body I adore and a mindset that liberates me, I have never been happier, more fulfilled, or more empowered to create the life I always dreamed of.
But when I think about the cost of living inauthentically - not just to me over all those years, but to all of us – it blows my mind.
The toll of people performing at a fraction of their capability, aren’t excited about work, play small & settle for less than their best, is incalculable.
We are more powerful than we know, more capable than we ever give ourselves credit for.
Yet Gallup found that 80% of employees in Australia feel disengaged from their work. Two-thirds are passively disengaged, 13% are actively disengaged, and only 20% feel truly engaged.
At what cost?
When we’re not being true to ourselves, it’s impossible to bring our best selves to anything we do, whether it’s work, relationships, or creative pursuits.
Which was me.
I was a shocking employee. I was smart, but disinterested, unfulfilled, & unmotivated.
I was in the wrong career because of my father. When I left school, I wanted to do something scientific & outdoors ! Instead I ended up doing accountancy - so as not to embarrass him, which led me to a 40-year career in because of my “people pleasing!”
But I’m not alone.
Many of us feel trapped in a role or relationship that doesn’t reflect who we truly are.
How many dads go to work every day believing that a husband and father’s role is to provide, no matter the personal cost ? How many mums put everyone else’s needs ahead of their own, sacrificing their dreams to care for their families ?
“I’m ok,” they say. “It’s fine.”
But is it?
When we live out of alignment with who we are, it costs us mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially. We justify it as “that’s just the way it is,” but deep down, we know it’s not.
It’s not unrealistic to want a more fulfilling life. It’s possible.
So I want to suggest here that experience trans people, like me, & the path we take, can shine a very bright light on possibility, possibility for ALL of society, showing that living authentically isn’t just about trans people, but about anyone ready to reinvent themselves, reclaim their truth, and live the life they were born to live.
What is your truth? If you’re not living it yet, now is the time to start. Let’s strive to live authentically, & unlock the potential within not just for ourselves, but for the world.
